Big Almaty Lake
Big Almaty Lake (BAO) is the closest "wow" to Almaty: a glacial lake at 2,511 m whose color shifts from turquoise to milky jade, surrounded by peaks over 4,000 m.
The tour is a perfect half-day: a scenic mountain road up the Big Almaty Gorge, viewpoints over the lake, and tea at a mountain lodge on the way down.
Private and flexible — ideal as a first acclimatization trip or for a short layover.

Good to know
Can we swim in the lake?
No — BAO supplies Almaty with drinking water, so the waterline is restricted. The viewpoints above offer the best photos anyway.
Is the altitude a problem?
For most people no — 2,511 m is fine for a short visit. Take it slow and drink water.
