Things to Do in Almaty: City, Mountains, Winter and Day Trips

2 October 2026 7 min read

Almaty is unusual among big cities: the mountains start where the southern streets end. That means a single trip can mix cafés and museums with alpine lakes, canyons and snow — often on the same day. Here is how the options break down.

In the city

  • Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral — a candy-coloured wooden church from 1907 in a shaded park.
  • The Green Bazaar — dried fruit, nuts, honey and local food, with tastings along the way.
  • Kok-Tobe hill — a cable car from the centre to a panorama of the whole city, best at sunset.
  • The pedestrian street locals call Arbat, for an easy evening walk.
  • The Central State Museum and the Kasteev Museum of Arts, if the weather turns.

In the mountains above the city

  • Medeu — the famous high-altitude skating rink at 1,691 m.
  • Shymbulak — a three-stage cable car up to around 3,200 m, with views straight into the high peaks.
  • Big Almaty Lake — a turquoise glacial lake at 2,511 m, about an hour away and reachable by car.
  • Ayusai and Alma-Arasan — green gorges on the edge of town, with a waterfall and a hot spring.

Day trips from Almaty

The landscapes that make the region famous sit 2–5 hours away and each needs a full day: Charyn Canyon and the Valley of Castles, the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes, the high Assy Plateau, the Singing Dune in Altyn-Emel and the gentler Issyk Lake with the Bear Waterfall. For cultural variety there is the ethno village with a nomadic show, and horseback riding in the Alatau foothills.

Things to do in Almaty in winter

Winter changes the list rather than shortening it. Shymbulak turns into a proper ski resort and Medeu opens for skating. The city under snow is quiet and photogenic, Kok-Tobe gets clear winter views, and Charyn Canyon can still be visited on clear days — red rock against snow is a genuinely underrated sight. The ethno village, horseback riding and the Alma-Arasan hot spring run through the cold months too.

What does not work in winter: the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes and the Assy Plateau. The mountain roads become unreliable in the cold season, and our tours there run from June to September.

With kids

The easiest family days are the ones with short walks and something to do at the end: the ethno village show with horses and master classes, horseback riding, Issyk Lake and the Bear Waterfall, Kok-Tobe and Medeu. Long drives like Kolsai and Kaindy are doable with older children, but a two-day version with a night in Saty is far kinder than one very long day.

In the evening

Time Kok-Tobe for sunset and stay for the lights of the city below, then head back down for a walk through the centre. Almaty stays lively late, especially in summer, and the centre is comfortable to walk around after dark.

How to fit it together

Start with the city and the mountains right above it while you adjust to the altitude, then use the following days for the long trips. Group tours are the most affordable way to reach the canyons and lakes; private tours let you set the timing. If you tell us your dates on WhatsApp, we will suggest what is open and worth your time that week.
